Know your shoes.

When it comes to shoes, there are numerous options out there for men- more so than you think! The subtle differences between the various styles decide what suits certain outfits and occasions, which makes it increasingly important to understand these differences and know your shoes so you can take your call on what to wear and when to wear it.

Oxford / Balmorals
The most formal and arguably the most popular shoes among men are oxfords, also referred to as balmorals. Oxfords have closed laces which is what creates a sleeker, more dressy look and makes it well suited for formal occasions like weddings, business meetings and funerals.  The toe styles also play a part in the level of formality, the most formal being a cap toe with the wing tip and plain toe following close behind.

Brogues
Brogues can be a category of either oxfords or derbys that have decorative perforations on the leather called broguing. Brogues are either wing tips or long tips and semi brogues are cap toe or medallions. The design details on them allow them to be worn with casuals but being oxfords they also add a formal look. Brogues are a must have in every man's wardrobe, preferably in a tan brown which would go with most outfits.

Derby / bluchers
Derbys or bluchers are often confused with oxfords. The difference between the two is in the laces. Derbys have open laces wit the tabs of the shoe sewn above the vamp, which makes it suitable to wear for casual events. Thanks to their simplicity though, they wouldn’t  look out of place at a formal event either.

Whole-cuts
Whole cuts are formal and elegant shoes made entirely from one piece of leather without any cuts. Although this does add a unique, sleek and classy look, it is not as formal as the oxfords but they remain formal enough for weddings and other functions.

Monk Strap
Similarly shaped to oxfords these shoes do not have laces and instead have a wide strap with buckles, either single buckle or double buckle. The fact that they do not have laces makes them less formal and they are mostly worn as smart casuals.

Chelsea boots
Chelsea boots are low heeled boots that replace laces with an elastic panel. They are perfect to pair with denims for a smart casual look and are probably one of the least formal shoes, apart from loafers of course .

Loafers
Loafers, just as the name suggests are the most comfortable shoes and are not suitable for formal occasions at all. They go well with chinos and shorts and leisure wear. Loafers in leather can pass off for smart casuals.

Now that you know the different styles of shoes and their level of formality, be sure to pair it right every time. Be it your oxfords and brogues or your loafers and monk straps, take the time to team it well with your outfit for it’s not going to go unnoticed!
